Principles of Government

In the summer of 1787, fifty-five delegates met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and wrote the United States Constitution.

These men knew a great deal about developing an effective and necessary government.

They read and discussed the basic ideas and principles written by political philosophers (thinkers).

Through these writings, they knew a lot about the history of governments over the past 2,000 years. They learned what types of governments worked well and had helped people live better lives. Many of these men had experiences with governments themselves because they were once ruled by Great Britain.

The men or "Founders" who wrote the Constitution used their knowledge and experience to create the best kind of government they could. Understanding their knowledge and experience will help you understand why they created the kind of government we have today.

Just to get you thinking!

Many people associate the image of the Statue of Liberty when they think about our government.

What images come to mind for you when you think about our government?

Think about it!
