Stretching Exercises for the Constitution: Changes after the Bill of Rights

  • Examine one amendment from the Eleventh Amendment through the Twenty-seventh Amendment.
  • Present a report and a poster on the amendment.
  • Discuss the amendments and their effect on the Constitution

What you will do:
Research the historical background of a constitutional amendment
Summarize and discuss research findings
Recognize the chronology and impact of the amendments

What you will need:

  • Textbooks and other available annotated sources of the Constitution
  • Poster sheets and other necessary poster materials

  • Constitution of the United States, Amendments 11-27
  • Notes on the Amendments



The steps to follow:

  1. Research an amendment passed since the Bill of Rights (11-27).
  2. Write a one-page report that summarizes your findings. Include the following:
    • The specific purpose and/or impact of the amendment.
    • Historical background surrounding the creation of the amendment.
    • Identification of the portion of the Constitution (by Article, Section, and specific language) modified by the new amendment's requirement
  3. Design a Powerpoint presentation to be displayed as part of a class timeline of amendments. The Powerpoint should display the following:
    • The number, title, and date of the amendment.
    • Several slides taking the main points from your one page report on the amendment.
    • Several illustrations or images that represents the amendment
