Alternative Assessment - If you like, you may do the following assignment instead of the current event. It's your choice!

What you will need:

  • Citizenship Research Guide.doc
  • Web Sites:
    • Department of Homeland Security: Citizenship Becoming a U.S. Citizen
    • NaturalizationTest.pdf
    • http://bensguide.gpo.gov/9-12/citizenship/citizenship.html

The steps to follow:

  1. Use the suggested web sites to complete Citizenshipresearchguide.doc
  2. Working as an individual:
    • Review answers from Part 2 of the research guide.
    • Choose six questions-three identified as easy (question 1) and three identified as hard (question 2).
    • Select four additional questions from Part 3 to create a ten-question test.
  3. Conduct an experiment by asking at least five friends, teachers, or family members to complete the test created in step 2. Collect and analyze the results to answer the following questions:
    • What was the average score?
    • Do the results match the questions defined as easy or hard?
    • How do the results compare between the naturalization test questions and the student-created questions?
  4. Using this analysis, discuss the following questions and draw conclusions about the naturalization test.
    • Is the test a fair examination for someone applying for citizenship? Why or why not?
    • If it is not a fair examination, how should the test change?
    • If it is a fair examination, should every U.S. citizen have to pass the test?
